The Milwaukee Brewers are relying heavily on their bullpen again as they try to win a second straight National League Central title.

The Milwaukee Brewers rode what was then the relative new trend of “bullpenning” all the way to the Game 7 of the National League Championship Series last October.
The situation reached the point Wednesday night where the Brewers did not have a starting pitcher available for its game against the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Thus, they went with a bullpen game and used five relievers to get through an 8-3 victory and complete a three-game series sweep. Another highlight was right-hander Devlin Williams making his major-league debut and allowed two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innigns.
However, that came under vastly different circumstances. Because of travel days and other breaks in the postseason schedule, those 10 games were spread out over 17 days. Starting pitching was clearly the Brewers’ weakness at the end of last season, which made general manager David Stearns’ offseason decision to double down on offense a little surprising. The Brewers re-signed third baseman Mike Moustakas to a one-year, $10-year contract and added catcher Yasmani Grandal on a one-year, $18.25-million contract as a free agent.
