Brennan Lee Mulligan discusses his Burrow's End character, her backstory, what inspired him to return to Fantasy High, and 20 seasons of Dimension 20.
Summary The new adventure, Burrow's End, is the twentieth season of Dimension 20. This side quest, which features Aabria Iyengar as Game Master, follows a family of stoats trying to survive in the mysterious Blue Forest. When the rest of their burrow is killed, they must leave their home in search of somewhere safe, but as they travel deeper into the forest, new dangers emerge that will test them.
And early on, knowing the source material, we talked a lot about Secret of Nimh. Mrs. Brisby is one of my favorite all time characters. And so that's the main, there's a huge, huge piece of Mrs. Brisby from The Secret of Nimh, that is within Tula. And specifically that idea of a very heroic, very soft spoken, tender, comforting character. That feels like a lot of what Tula is about. But when characters were being generated I knew I wanted something in the Mrs.
Whether you have a very present parental figure like we do in Burrow's End, or whether your parents are not with you, I think there's a moment where there is a service being asked of you as a child, How do I honor and respect my parents or my older generation? And there's a service being asked of you by your children. And if you are being drained really hard, you don't feel like you have the energy that everybody is asking for. You have to kind of break in some of those.
There's an element that the softness, and the tenderness and the exhaustion is kind of a reaction to tragedy in a lot of ways and you can see little bits and pieces of that, throughout. In other ways it's almost like she is a soldier who's put down the sword and a shield, you know what I mean? It's like, I used to have this side of my personality that was really assertive, and that's not what's called for anymore.
I think probably something that Tula is aware of is on the one hand, anger is a great spackle over grief. So if you can be angry at your dead Dad, you don't have to feel the hard feelings about the fact that... people and stoats will go way out of their way to feel a negative feeling. If it lets them feel some control over the world.
And Siobhan obviously, I've played with so many times and I've been Siobhan's sister, and I've been her mother and her father. I've been Siobhan's mom, before. I was Arianwen Abernant, right? I was Caramelinda Rocks. I've been Siobhan's mom plenty of times, but now we're just doing it longer form and I can't be anybody else at the same time.
You see, when they're fleeing, that she's like, Jaysohn, can you focus and lead us out of here? I think there's a lot of things that I aspire to in Tula of your kids idiosyncrasies are strengths and gifts.
Fans have been waiting for it and wanting it for years. How did you know that you'd found the right story to bring the Bad Kids back again? She's got an amazing ability to marry together all of the elements of production in game design and gameplay. Aabria throwing down the gauntlet, if Aabria walked up and slapped me in the face with a glove and challenged me to a duel I would just give. What's at's the other thing you do other than go fight the duel? You're like I'm giving you the satisfaction... Brennan Lee Mulligan: Yeah, I would surrender. I would surrender in a dual with Aabria.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: it's different for every one. Fantasy High obviously stays present in our minds, because it stays present in the minds of our viewers, right? Any given day, you can go online and see amazing fan art of the current season a Dimension 20 and four new pieces of Fantasy High fan art, even though it sophomore year ended almost four years ago. Right? So it's a wild thing where it has stayed in the minds of fans in a big, big way.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: Oh my god. Aabria Antiope Jones. Yeah, you are you're never late. You are always on time. Oh, I love that. I love that so much. Yes, a lot going on with I mean the world of Spyre also like you're saying The Seven, Pirates of Leviathan, multiple live shows. Fancy High, Spyre has the most sort of adventure already in it. And it's really exciting. It's really really cool.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: Being in this very tragic world for Burrow's End, I love tragedy. I think given a shot, part of the reason I picked Tula as well, is that Aabria wanted to tell a dark story. And when Matt tells you I want to do sneaky underhanded espionage, cloak and dagger, I'm going to make a person that can't roll lower than 20 on a deception check. I'm gonna make a sneaky little radish man.
