Mayor London Breed on Tuesday called upon the San Francisco Unified School District to “immediately” stop its school-closures process, saying she has “lost confidence” in Superintendent Matt Wayne ’s “ability to manage the current process.”
Last month, Breed deployed a team of multiple department heads to provide oversight of The City’s public schools and help stabilize the district as it contends with declining enrollment, hiring snafus and fiscal mismanagement. The stabilization team received its first major assignment earlier this month, helping the district hire over 250 special-education positions that were unaccounted for. Failing to fill the federally mandated roles triggers the potential for lawsuits.
Breed joins a growing chorus of nonprofit organizations and policymakers calling for a delay or outright termination of the closure process, which critics said will not save the district a significant amount of money in the long run. “Schools are not just places for learning, they are environments where children interact, collaborate, and develop social skills. More importantly, they are communities of hope, love, and opportunity that should be cherished, not destroyed,” Chris Ballard, Executive Director of Coleman Advocates, said in a statement.
