Brecksville plans to install audible pedestrian signals, also known as accessible pedestrian signals, at three intersections downtown.
It’s unclear why Arlington and the City Hall entrance were chosen, although Brecksville Road and 82 is one of the busiest intersections in town.
City officials didn’t respond when asked how the audible pedestrian signals would work in Brecksville., audible or accessible pedestrian signals inform vision-impaired people when it’s safe to cross the street through sounds, vibrations and/or spoken messages. The pushbutton is in the shape of an arrow, so pedestrians would be certain, by feeling the button, which direction they are heading.
The audible signals might even adjust their volume based on the traffic noise around them. If the intersection is noisy, the signals would become louder.
