Springburn Winter Gardens Trust has secured £1,129,059 from the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to begin work on its A-listed glass house, left empty for decades.
One of Glasgow 's derelict spaces is to see vital regeneration with a funding breakthrough that will hopefully see it fully revamped. Springburn Winter Gardens Trust has secured £1,129,059 from the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to begin work on its A-listed glass house, left empty for decades.
The huge glass house, known locally as the 'hot hoose' has been left to deteriorate for 40-odd years, but this crucial funding means work can begin on restoring it to its former glory. Constructed by Messrs. Simpson and Farmer in 1899, the Springburn Park Winter Gardens were once the largest of their kind in Scotland and a testament to Victorian engineering. But the gardens have languished in a state of neglect for generations after a devastating storm forced it to close in 1983. However, amid more investment from Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government into the Springburn area, the million-pound funding has marked a 'big milestone' for the community, who now say they can begin work on regenerating the huge glass structure. Springburn Winter Gardens Trust, which has been fighting to save and renovate the old glass house, said it was 'grateful' for the breakthrough funding. The group announced on Facebook: 'Springburn Winter Gardens Trust has secured £1,129,059 from the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to finally begin the restoration of our A-listed hothouse. 'Thanks to all of our trustees and supporters who have helped us to reach this big milestone for Springburn!' Springburn Councilor Garham Campbell SNP, added under the post: 'This is brilliant news for the Winter Gardens. Thank you to the Scottish Government for the grant and to Glasgow City Council officers for making this successful bid on Springburn’s behalf. 'It means the Springburn Winter Garden Trust can now implement its plans to save the building, develop the site as a community usable outdoor space and to protect this vital piece of local heritage.'
