A major breakthrough in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been achieved with reports of a hostage deal. The Qatari prime minister is expected to address the nation shortly on the agreement, confirmed by a Qatari official. This follows intensified negotiations in Qatar brokered by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, with support from the Biden administration. The deal comes after a series of high-profile assassinations and a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November.
A major breakthrough in the ongoing Israel i-Palestinian conflict is imminent, with reports indicating a hostage deal has been reached. The Qatar i prime minister is expected to address the nation shortly on the agreement, a Qatar i official confirmed to ABC News. President-elect Donald Trump also announced the deal on his Truth Social platform, stating, 'WE HAVE A DEAL FOR THE HOSTAGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST . THEY WILL BE RELEASED SHORTLY.
THANK YOU!'This development comes after a new round of ceasefire negotiations commenced in Qatar on January 3rd. Delegations representing both Israel and Hamas traveled to Doha to resume talks mediated by Qatari and Egyptian officials. The Biden administration also played a crucial role in facilitating the negotiations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously expressed the US's desire for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all remaining captives before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20th. On January 6th, Blinken reported 'intensified engagement,' including from Hamas, towards reaching a deal, although he acknowledged that 'We are yet to see agreement on final points.' He emphasized the need for Hamas to make 'the final necessary decisions to complete the agreement' and bring 'relief for the people in Gaza, creating an opportunity to actually move forward to something better, more secure for everyone involved.' This agreement follows a ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Hezbollah in November after Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon, escalating its conflict with Hezbollah. It also follows the high-profile assassinations of key Hamas leaders, Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar (one of the architects of the October 7th, 2023 attack on Israel), as well as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israel has claimed responsibility for these deaths. The war between Israel and Hamas has tragically claimed over 46,000 lives in Gaza and injured almost 110,000, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. This figure does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but reveals a devastating toll with over 14,000 children and 8,000 women killed. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have reported killing over 15,000 combatants during the war, which was ignited by the unprecedented Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th, 2023, in southern Israel. This attack resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the capture of 253 people, according to Israeli authorities. During a week-long ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in late November 2023, Hamas released over 100 people in exchange for Israel's release of over 200 Palestinians from Israeli prisons. In the following months, several hostages in Gaza were freed, and the bodies of others were recovered. As of early January, amidst renewed negotiations, 94 abductees remained in Gaza, including 34 confirmed dead, according to Israeli officials
