Charlotte's young guard is set to miss the start of the season.

Just minutes before the Charlotte Hornets tip off the preseason in Miami, the team announced that third-year guard James Bouknight will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow to address a meniscus injury in his left knee. He will be reevaluated in four weeks with a firm timetable to return remaining unknown at this point.

Bouknight has spent his first two seasons with the organization bouncing back and forth between Charlotte and the G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. In 34 games with the big league club last season, Bouknight averaged 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 35% from the field and 30% from three-point range.

Charlotte is already relatively thin on backcourt options coming into the season with Cody Martin still working his way back from a knee injury that kept him out essentially all of last season. The Hornets will need newcomers Frank Ntilikina and possibly Edmond Sumner to step up and provide quality depth off the bench until Martin and Bouknight return to action.

Charlotte also announced that Bryce McGowens has been downgraded to OUT for tonight's game against the Heat. Ntilikina is nursing a right hamstring but will be available tonight and is expected to play. The Hornets and Heat are set to tip at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Southeast.
