Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan gives a detailed and blunt reply when asked about the possibility of a spinoff centered around Walt Jr.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan responds to the idea of a Walt Jr. spinoff. Played by RJ Mitte, Walt Jr. is present throughout Breaking Bad as the son of Walter and Skyler White . Walt Jr. is arguably one of the key factors in Walter making his initial decision to turn to a life of crime since he needs money to secure a better life for his son, who was born with cerebral palsy.

In a new Variety interview with Gilligan, in which the four-time Emmy winner discussed the past and potential future of Breaking Bad, the creator was asked about the chances of a spinoff focused on Walter White's son. Mitte has even joked about the possibility, saying that Walt Jr. could be a drug kingpin. In the quote below, Gilligan expresses interest in working with Mitte again but casts serious doubt on any Walt Jr.

Okay, But Walt Jr. Still Deserved Better Part of Walt Jr.'s sidelining in Breaking Bad is deliberate, as Jesse becomes something of a surrogate son to Walter at points. During one scene, Walter even refers to Walt Jr. as Jesse. Yet, despite the fact that the decision added layers to the Walt and Jesse relationship, another effect is that Walt Jr. often felt like a minor character even with Mitte’s status as a regular cast member.

Walt and Jesse never meet in Breaking Bad, which would have been interesting to see. It also would have been worthwhile to spend more time examining the fundamentally altered relationship between father and son. Breaking Bad did provide Walt Jr. with a few moments to rage out at Walter. However, by that point, it felt more like an effort to tie up a loose end rather than truly incorporating Walt into the fabric of the story.

The series wrapped up in spectacular fashion, offering up a top-tier final season. The goal should not have been to force Walt Jr. to be more than he was or even worse to try and force a spinoff now. Still, the writers certainly could have made more of an effort to flesh out Walt Jr. At one point, his relative lack of Breaking Bad screen time even became a meme with viewers.
