For Houston basketball, a chance to get much-needed rest before getting back to work at regional
Banged-up UH guards Marcus Sasser and Jamal Shead will get a much-needed time to relax and heal during the Cougars' nearly week-long gap between their second-round win over Auburn and Friday's regional semifinal against Miami. The biggest prize for the University of Houston advancing to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament? A chance to catch a breather.
“Just get some rest,” coach Kelvin Sampson said of the next few days before the No. 1-seeded Cougars play fifth-seeded Miami in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Kansas City, Mo. “This time of year, everybody is beat up, even the guys that don’t have the celebrated injuries. We’ve got a lot of guys that are hurt that nobody talks about.
Houston, UH’s longtime associate athletics director for sports medicine, has been arguably the busiest and most important person within the men’s basketball program during the past nine days. He was immediately responsible for the treatment Sasser received for the groin injury suffered at the AAC tournament and again after the All-American guard aggravated the injury in the NCAA Tournament opener.
After three games in three days at the AAC tournament in Fort Worth, the Cougars had a quick turnaround with a Thursday-Saturday bracket in the Midwest Region. UH will get an extra day at home with a Friday-Sunday format for the regional semifinals and final.
