Guimarães, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), shares videos of his patients 'flying' (balanced over his shoulder) or running into the operating room, each donning a colorful superhero costume. According to Guimarães, the idea came from a desire to make the surgical room entrance less stressful for children.
He recalls a two-year-old patient, Allana, who entered the operating room crying uncontrollably. That experience spurred him to find a way to make surgery a more positive experience for his young patients. \Guimarães explains that he lets the child choose their preferred superhero costume and explains that they will be 'flying' or running to clear their nose and ears. He says he enters the surgical room when the child is engaged in the game, and if they are still scared, he asks a parent to join them. This approach helps to create a calmer environment for anesthesia induction. After the patient falls asleep, the costume is removed and given to the parent as a memento. Guimarães usually records the child's entrance and sends the video to the mother, allowing them to share the memory of their child's bravery. \ All children get to take their costumes home after surgery, and Guimarães says that some children operated on by his colleagues even ask for costumes. He explains that many of his patients return for follow-up appointments wearing their costumes, proudly displaying that the experience wasn't traumatic. Guimarães shares that he gets emotional when parents tell him their children talk about wanting to have surgery again because of the positive, playful memory they have of the experience.
