Stadium funding plan welcomed across Co Derry by fans of both Derry City and Coleraine
The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium must be included in a new funding scheme for local football grounds across Northern Ireland, Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has said.
In a statement, Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said: “The Sub Regional Stadia Programme was first announced in 2011 and more than a decade on we are finally at the point where this funding will be allocated to football clubs across the North. While there were scant details in the Minister’s statement today, it was always anticipated that Derry City FC’s Brandywell Stadium would be part of the funding allocation and it’s vital that the Minister provides more details as soon as possible.
Coleraine fans and East Londonderry MLAs Alan Robinson and Maurice Bradley, in a joint DUP statement, welcomed the release of the £36.2m funding package. "This funding has been beset by significant delays and it is very welcome that Minister Lyons has taken the bull by the horns and has released this money. He has also rightly recognised that this isn’t the end of the story and is not the height of our ambition. Further funding will need to be allocated in later years, but now the focus must be on ensuring that the application process opens, and the funding is allocated as quickly as possible.
