A new doctoral thesis from Örebro University reveals that aging can lead to poorer communication between different brain regions, resulting in memory impairments. The research, conducted by Pernilla Andersson, found that older adults with memory problems have lower-quality connections between brain areas, which can affect how efficiently information is processed.

Results show that older people with memory impairments have poorer communication between different regions in the brain. They also tend to have lower quality in the fibres connecting these brain regions. "When the hippocampus shrinks, the risk of proactive interference increases in older age. The hippocampus plays an important role in noting the context in which certain information or events occur."
