The XFL ownership group of Johnson, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale are making a similar bet on themselves, choosing to revive a spring football league despite the long list of failures that preceded them. San Antonio’s attendance nearly matched the combined figure of 24,831 from Saturday games in Houston and Arlington, and Garcia announced on the field before kickoff that the 2023 XFL championship game will also be played in San Antonio.
Before the question from the media about the city’s history of flops was finished, Garcia was quick to interject: “Not our team.” In a city that has long aspired to be the home of an NFL franchise, Nirenberg said strong support for a thriving XFL team can be “one point along that journey.”
