Cornerback Luq Barcoo, San Antonio’s top draft choice on defense, is embracing the challenge of matching up with wideout Josh Gordon, the NFL’s leading receiver in 2013.

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 19: Josh Gordon #0 of the Seattle Sea Dragons celebrates with teammates after catching a pass for a touchdown against the DC Defenders during the first half of the XFL game at Audi Field on February 19, 2023 in Washington, DC. San Antonio Brahmas cornerback Luq Barcoo was still early in his high school career in Southern California when Josh Gordon was tearing up the NFL, leading the league with 1,646 receiving yards in 2013.

Seeing Gordon on the schedule as the Brahmas travel to face the Seattle Sea Dragons at 9 p.m. Saturday, Barcoo approached his coaches, asking for the opportunity to shadow Gordon one-on-one. Behind Gordon, the 31-year-old known both for his immense talent and his five suspensions tied to the NFL’s drug policy, the Sea Dragons have the top passing offense in the XFL through three weeks, averaging 284 yards per game. Gordon leads the team with three touchdown catches, and his 225 receiving yards rank behind only teammate Jahcour Pearson’s 272 for the XFL lead.

“Going against Josh Gordon, it’ll be another challenge for him, but I like his mindset,” Ward said. “He’s up for the challenges. He wants to be the best cornerback in this league, pound for pound, man-to-man coverage, and he’s pretty legit.”
