A 53-year-old interior designer was tricked into sending over $850,000 to a scammer posing as Brad Pitt and his mother. The elaborate scheme involved fabricated medical diagnoses and AI-generated images.
A representative for Brad Pitt is warning the public to be wary of unsolicited direct messages from individuals impersonating celebrities, following a romance scam targeting a 53-year-old interior designer. The scam involved a fake account posing as Pitt's mother, Jane Etta Pitt, who contacted the victim, Anne, claiming that her famous son needed someone like her. Anne, who was going through a divorce at the time, initially dismissed the message as unbelievable.
However, she engaged in conversations with the imposter, who gradually built a romantic relationship, sending love poems, declarations of affection, and eventually a marriage proposal.The fake Pitt then confided in Anne, alleging he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and required financial assistance for treatment. To convince Anne, the scammer sent photos of Pitt in a hospital gown and an email from a fabricated 'doctor' stating the actor's terminal illness. Anne, heartbroken and believing the fabricated narrative, transferred over $850,000 to the scammer's Turkish account, believing she was funding Pitt's medical expenses. However, the images and emails were all fabricated using AI technology. Anne's daughter eventually alerted her to the reality of the situation, revealing that she was being deceived by a con artist. Despite this, Anne struggled to accept the truth. Since her story aired on French television, Anne has become a target of online harassment and cyberbullying.
