'The Lion King' opened higher in China than 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Jungle Book,' while outgrossing 'Aladdin's total cume in just three days.
began its global box office reign in China this weekend, as the 2019 animated remake of the 1994 animated feature earned a solid $54.7 million in its first three days. That’s right in the middle of tracking guestimates which were in the $50 million-to-$60 million range, but it still lived up to its predictions. And considering that China wasn’t remotely a do-or-die territory for the Jon Favreau musical, this is a strong result.
If I’m being optimistic, I should note that there are three things in its favor specifically in China. First, the word of mouth is pretty darn strong, so folks seem to enjoy it. Second, the overall themes aren’t that far off from what pushed Pixar’s, the film is indeed “foreign” enough that it’ll stand out alongside China’s homegrown biggies.
Now that China has its own homegrown blockbusters, presuming they aren’t all going to get state-censored off the release calendar at the list minute, the likes ofshows that Chinese moviegoers don’t need big Hollywood blockbusters that conventionally pander to China. I would argue that something likeis at a minor advantage in China because it is specifically “foreign” while offering universal themes.
