The box office competition between Gladiator II and Wicked has seen the latter title take an early lead in their mutual opening weekend. Gladiator II, which stars Paul Mescal, is the 24-years-later sequel to the Ridley Scott Best Picture winner which sees the director returning to the helm for another Ancient Rome epic.
✕ Remove Ads Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Wicked has taken a secure lead over Gladiator II with a projected 3-day opening weekend of $117 million at the domestic box office. The Ridley Scott movie is projected to have an opening weekend of $60 million, which is nearly half of the musical's projections.
