A state lawmaker wants to change how the attorney general is selected in Utah, and the governor expressed early support for the idea.

A state lawmaker wants to change how the attorney general is selected in Utah, and the governor expressed early support for the idea in an exclusive interview with KUTV 2News.The proposal from Sen. Mike McKell – which has been considered before – would change the AG’s position from an elected office to an appointed one.
In a statement Thursday to KUTV 2News, Reyes noted most states elect, rather than appoint, their attorney general. Appointed AGs can’t exercise independent discretion or decision making and they become just an extension of the governor or whomever appoints them.
