Boulder police on Wednesday announced that as the 26th anniversary of JonBenét Ramsey’s death approaches, homicide investigators will consult with the Colorado Cold Case Review Team in 2023 as part of“This crime has left a hole in the hearts of many, and we will never stop investigating until we find JonBenet’s killer,” Police Chief Maris Herold said in a police news release.

According to the release, federal, state, and local partners have assisted Boulder police in the investigation, including the FBI, the Boulder District Attorney’s Office, Colorado’s Department of Public Safety,, and several private DNA laboratories across the country. The Cold Case Review Team is made up of professional investigative, analytical, and forensic experts from across the state.

The release described the team as a tool to help further cold case investigations by basing its recommendations on best practices in the investigative field. The release also reiterated that the size of the DNA sample in the case is potentially too small for some kinds of DNA testing. It stated that the department would have the sample tested if new technology that reliably tests similar samples becomes available.calling on the Colorado governor to transfer decisions involving DNA evidence in the unsolved Ramsey case from the Boulder Police Department to an independent investigatory agency.

Since JonBenet’s 1997 murder, detectives have investigated leads stemming from more than 21,000 tips, letters, and emails, according to Wednesday’s release from Boulder. Investigators have traveled to 19 states to interview or speak with more than 1,000 people.
