Grading Ryan Day and the rest of the Buckeyes after Ohio State's win over Rutgers.
How did the Buckeyes grade in their win over Rutgers? Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.Williams was outstanding, mixing power with his usual helter-skelter juke moves, and he never seemed to tire. He finished with 189 yards on 21 carries, a 9-yard average. He actually outgained Rutgers 94-90 in the first half.
pushed Rutgers linebacker Wesley Bailey 9 yards upfield while Williams cut outside of them and sprinted to the end zone.was pedestrian by his own lofty standards. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 154 yards, with two touchdowns. But he was off on several throws and struggled somewhat in the red zone, and his interception was thrown into quadruple coverage. Even Rutgers can defend that.Linebackers Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers are forces in the run game so far this season.
Defensive end Zach Harrison, while not flourishing as a pass rusher, remains active and forced a fumble and tipped the pass that Chambers intercepted.Rutgers' touchdown came after an opening three-and-out was ruined when Emeka Egbuka fumbled the ensuing punt. It put the Buckeyes behind 7-0, which is not a big deal against Rutgers. But such return instability against Penn State might be another story.has been outstanding in dropping balls inside the 10-yard line.
After a few weeks of clean play, though, the Buckeyes were flagged for six penalties for 41 yards. Two penalties were foolish, with defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau lining up once in the neutral zone and end Caden Curry hitting the quarterback late.Williams' running and the coaches' fighting were highlights, but the electric Ohio State passing game was off and Rutgers was outmanned in a big way.
Rutgers looked like it was trying an onside kick in the third quarter, but kicker Jude McAtamney, whose onside attempt in the first quarter failed, didn't quite know what to do and actually ran by the ball without touching it. That brought a flag for offside and caused Schiano to run onto the field to explain things to his kicker. McAtamney then booted the ensuing kickoff out of bounds.
