Backstage at Botter this morning, an unusual pre-show scene was unfolding. Lisi Herrebrugh and Rushemy Botter and a crew of production assistants were slipping condoms filled with dyed water over the arms of their first model, who wore a button-down and trousers in the Caribbean blue that they’ve made a signature. “We really want to bring water to the runway,” Botter said.
Out on the runway, the models’ hands swam in little prophylactic aquariums. Anything that raises awareness about our oceans is a net positive. They’re drowning in 8 million metric tons of plastic each year. Then there are the warming temperatures, which kill corals, subsequently leading to species loss. It’s a grim picture, and that’s without taking pollution into account.
For spring Rushemy and Herrebrugh’s research led them to a material made from kelp, which they used for a pair of great-looking tube dresses, the first in an aquatic print and the second in black with a scuba-like vest built in. Seaweed is something of a miracle plant. It absorbs CO2 more effectively than trees, and it’s believed that wearing fabrics made with it has beneficial health properties, reducing environmental damage to the skin and slowing down aging.
The other way they kept the oceans top of mind was with their silhouettes. The heart-shaped lapels on suits and cardigans worn like tube tops with the sleeves wrapped around the neck are interpretations of the way divers look when they come up for air and peel their scuba gear off their shoulders. The men’s tailored jumpsuits are similarly informed by the slim all-in-one lines of wetsuits.
