Mourners gathered outside Union United Methodist Church in the South End Tuesday to say goodbye to Mel King. The 94-year-old icon of the civil rights movement in Boston died on March 28.

Hundreds came to the church Monday afternoon to pay respects to King as he lay in repose for a public viewing. Among those were Sen. Ed Markey, who came to present King's family with an American flag that flew over the U.S Capitol. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was also in attendance, as were several other current and former office holders. Former Mayor Ray Flynn, flanked by his wife Catherine and son City Councilor Ed Flynn, also paid his respects.

A line of people stretches down West Rutland Square and through Titus Sparrow Park for the public viewing of Mel King at the Union United Methodist Church in the South End. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu greets former U.S Rep. Joe Kennedy III outside of the church. Former Mayor of Boston Ray Flynn, his wife Catherine and his son City Councilor Ed Flynn walk out of the church after paying their respects at the viewing. Ray Flynn became mayor after beating Mel King in the 1983 election.

U.S. Senator Edward Markey and state Rep. Nika Elugardo walk up the stairs of the church with a folded American flag. The banner was flown over the U.S. Capitol in remembrance of King.
