Several people were injured in a morning shooting at a local Caribbean holiday event, the latest in a series of shootings at such an event.
At least seven people were injured Saturday morning at Boston's Jouvert Parade, according to local police. Police were informed of the shooting at about 7:45 a.m. The injured were escorted to a hospital, where they received appropriate care. All victims were taken to the hospital, and the injuries were non-life threatening, police said. Several firearms were confiscated, and several arrests were made, they noted.
"Today's mass shooting highlights the gun violence crisis we are facing in the city. This is a public health and public safety emergency. Boston Police are confiscating and recovering guns at an alarming rate throughout the neighborhood. Now is the time to come together and develop a gun violence strategy in Boston," Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn said in a statement.
A Caribbean American festival was scheduled to take place today nearby at Franklin Park. However, there is a history of violence occurring around these festivals, according to the Boston Herald. Last year, one person was killed, and several more were injured during the event.
