A new law lets Boston increase maximum fines for the first time in decades — from $300 up to $2,000. The change is primarily intended to help the city crack down on businesses and landlords fueling the city's rat problems.

President-elect Donald Trump is set to be sentenced this morning in New York for his hush money conviction — though he is unlikely to face prison time or probation. NPR hasinto law this week approving the change. Previously, Boston couldn’t issue any fines higher than $300 — a limit that hadn’t changed in 35 years.on businesses and landlords who violate the city’s sanitary code.
What’s next: The new law intends to avoid that same sort of policy drift in the coming years. Boston will be allowed to increase the ceiling for fines every five years, based on inflation.Emerson College’s campus in Los Angeles is operating remotely today, as wildfires continue to devastate Southern California. Students and staff — including Emerson President Jay Bernhardt — were evacuated from the Sunset Boulevard campus Wednesday night due to the fires.
