The Lunar New Year will be designated as an official holiday in the city of Boston. The new holiday will be observed starting on Feb. 10, 2024.
The vote brings Boston in step with California, where Lunar New Year is a state holiday, and New York City, which recently approved it as a school holiday.
“AAPIs have always been an integral part of our city and our country, yet they have faced strong institutional discrimination and racism throughout history,” said Boston City Council President Flynn in a statement, citing the city's large population of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders largely concentrated in Chinatown and Dorchester.
