Severe weather is on the horizon for Boston, with a series of storms bringing snow, sleet, and strong winds over the next few weeks.
Boston is preparing for a typical New England winter, with a series of storms predicted to bring snow, wind, and potentially hazardous conditions over the next few weeks. The next weather system is expected to arrive on Thursday, bringing widespread snowfall that will transition to sleet near the Massachusetts -New Hampshire border. There's a possibility of the snow mixing with rain south of the city. This will be followed by strong winds on Friday.
Thursday's storm will begin in the morning, moving from southwest to northeast across the region. Snowfall is anticipated to start in the Boston area around 9 a.m., adhering to the ground immediately due to the already present cold air. The snow will begin as a lighter, fluffier variety but will gradually mix with rain as it approaches the South Shore and Cape Cod later in the day. The most intense snowfall is likely to occur from late morning into early afternoon before gradually diminishing in the evening. The ground temperature is cold enough that even light snowfall will accumulate rapidly, making travel conditions hazardous during both the morning and evening commutes. Approximately two inches of accumulation is expected in Boston, with up to four inches north and west of the city, and less to the south.A significant point of uncertainty currently is the extent to which the rain/snow line extends northward. However, the trailing edge of precipitation is also expected to arrive swiftly, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. This rapid transition could result in lingering slippery travel conditions during the Thursday evening commute. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph, or even higher, are projected to develop out of the west northwest on Friday, potentially causing isolated instances of wind damage and power outages. Another storm is scheduled to arrive late Saturday night into Sunday, with snow beginning Saturday evening and continuing into early Sunday morning. There is another possibility of mixing with rain in Southern New England, depending on the storm's path. It is still too early to accurately predict snowfall totals for this event, but it is anticipated to be another substantial, quickly moving storm. Furthermore, winter's grip on the region appears to be far from loosening, with yet another storm looming for the middle of next week. With an active weather pattern persisting through the end of February, Boston is likely to experience above-average snow accumulation by the month's conclusion
