The grant, if received, would go toward the planning and design stages of the Nenana to Fairbanks section of the proposed 500-mile trail.
Tune in for today's latest news stories on KXDF CBS News 13 at 5pm.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks North Star Borough is vying for federal funds to jumpstart progress on the northernmost segment of the proposed Alaska Long Trail.
“The opportunity came to our attention over the last few weeks, and ... the borough has been an advocate for this particular project for a number of years,” FNSB Mayor Bryce Ward said in a Tuesday phone interview. “So we see an opportunity to get some funding for it, and thought it would be appropriate for us to go for it.”
Akin to long-distance destination hikes, like the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail or the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail, the Alaska Long Trail is seen as a possible strategy to attract more visitors and has collected sweeping support from the state, local governments and tourism organizations. “It’s one that would encourage longer stays within the state as they traverse the trail, and subsequently that adds more to the economy within the different communities as far as visitor spending,” McCrea said.
“It seems easier to fill in those small existing gaps, and that’s what a lot of effort has been focused on for the past couple of years,” Medovaya said, adding “a lot of distance needs to be planned and developed in the next few years to make the trail concepts possible.”
