Born with a rare genetic disorder, a young La Porte woman is remembered as an inspiration
Speech language pathologist Sue Anne Akers, right, worked with Courtney Rosas to help her communicate. Rosas was born with a rare condition called spinal muscular atrophy type 1. “The only thing Courtney could really move was her eyes, and once you met her — and you couldn’t miss that red hair — you were impressed,” Akers said.Courtney Rosas' family and community remember how she defied the odds every second of her life.
Doctors told her then-16-year-old mother, Candace, that the infant would not live past 18 months and would never be able to breath or move any part of her body on her own. “The only thing Courtney could really move was her eyes, and once you met her — and you couldn’t miss that red hair — you were impressed,” Akers said.
Rosas was 5 years old when Akers began working with her. They communicated through infrared technology that interpreted retina movement.
