BREAKING: Boris Johnson to resign as Prime Minister
Boris Johnson will stand down, a No 10 source has confirmed to the Press Association.
Prime Minister Mr Johnson, under intense pressure to go after a mass of senior Government resignations, has spoken to Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady and agreed to step aside.A Tory leadership battle will commence this summer, with a new leader in place in time for the party's October conference.
Earlier, Mr Johnson was told he should “leave with dignity” and “go now”, by newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi in the wake of a wave of ministerial resignations. Mr Zahawi, who was only appointed on Tuesday, said he had made clear privately to Mr Johnson that he should go but “I am heartbroken that he hasn’t listened and that he is now undermining the incredible achievements of this Government at this late hour”.
The Chancellor’s extraordinary statement said the country “deserves a Government that is not only stable, but which acts with integrity”.
