BREAKING: Boris Johnson says removing statues 'would be to lie about our history'
As well as showing their solidarity for the struggles faced by African Americans, activists in Britain are calling for more education on the country’s troubling colonial past and have questioned a number of statues which they say glorifies white supremacy. Campaigners haveOfficials in Bristol have fished out the statue of Colston andWhile he helped defeat a genocidal Nazi Germany, Churchill was not shy about his own racist beliefs.
He has also been criticised for advocating the use of chemical weapons to supress Afghans and Kurds during his time as minister for war in 1919. Urging people to avoid large rallies this weekend, Boris Johnson added: ‘As for the planned demonstrations, we all understand the legitimate feelings of outrage at what happened in Minnesota and the legitimate desire to protest against discrimination.
‘But it is clear that the protests have been sadly hijacked by extremists intent on violence. The attacks on the police and indiscriminate acts of violence which we have witnessed over the last week are intolerable and they are abhorrent. The only responsible course of action is to stay away from these protests.’
