Ministers have abandoned Boris Johnson’s plans to bring in laws to protect animals including banning the live export of farm animals, puppy smuggling and dog theft The decision breaks yet another Conservative manifesto pledge
Mr Johnson pledged to overhaul the UK’s animal welfare laws in an attempt to show the early benefits of Brexit, which also included plans to ban the import of foie gras and fur.
“And in particular, Labour is clearly determined to play political games by widening the scope of this Bill.” The proposed laws were intended to ban the keeping of primates as pets, as well as prohibiting the export of livestock, and the import of dogs, cats and ferrets. It was also due to restrict importing animals that are pregnant, under a certain age, or which have undergone mutilations such as cropped ears and tails.
