Following 46 deaths in the last 24 hours, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a lockdown protocol that would bar gatherings of more than 2 people and forbid everyone from leaving the house for nonessential purposes
“It is vital to slow the spread of the disease because that is the way we reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment,” Johnson said before reiterating the importance of staying home.
He cited four occasions where leaving the house would be permissible: 1) Shopping for basic necessities, which should be done as infrequently as possible; 2) Brief outdoor exercise once daily, alone or with members of one’s own household; 3) Seeking medical attention; and 4) Traveling to work if absolutely necessary and only when impossible to complete at home.
“If you don’t follow the rules, the police will have the powers to enforce them,” Johnson added, suggesting that infractions may lead to fines. All nonessential businesses and public gatherings will be closed or halted as part of the measure, parks may remain open for exercise. “No prime minister wants to enact measures like this. I know the damage that this disruption is doing and will do to people’s lives, to their businesses and to their jobs,” he added. 66.4 million people who call the United Kingdom home will be impacted by the new mandate, but they’re certainly in good company.
