Boris Johnson allows Huawei to build parts of the UK's 5G network after Trump urged Britain to ban the Chinese tech giant
"We ask operators to use Huawei in a limited way so we can collectively manage the risk and NCSC put in place a wider mitigation strategy," Levy wrote.
He said there was"nothing we do can entirely remove risk in any telecoms network with any vendor and so our intent is to get the risk down to an acceptable level in all the different networks using all the different vendors." The government said Tuesday it would seek to attract new vendors, promising to review and potentially lower the restrictions on the proportion of the network"high-risk vendors" can provide once new competitors were in the market.
The decision to cap Huawei’s market share in non-core parts — while helping to ease security services’ woes — also helps operators manage the costs of rolling out 5G. Huawei’s equipment is not always cheaper than that of its competitors — the Swedish Ericsson and Finnish Nokia — but operators fear cutting the Chinese vendor from bidding processes would mean the other two won’t price their equipment as sharply.
