Border Patrol agents spike tires of fleeing car; resulting crash injures 2 [Breaking]

A man and woman were seriously injured in a crash during a Thursday morning Border Patrol pursuit after agents used a spike strip to deflate their tires on a roadway east of Chula Vista, authorities said.

The incident began around 9:15 a.m. when Border Patrol agents attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Otay Lakes Road along the northeastern edge of Lower Otay Lake, according to Tekae Michael, a Border Patrol special operations supervisor. The woman driving the vehicle stopped momentarily, allowing four people to jump out of the back seat of the car and run off, Michael said in a statement. The driver then sped away, heading west toward Chula Vista, with the agents in pursuit.

Agents ahead of the chase placed spike stripes in the road about a half-mile from where the pursuit began, and after driving over the spikes, the driver lost control of her vehicle, Michael said.Advertisement Agents helped extricate the driver and her passenger, a man, and requested medical aid, Michael said. Paramedics took both to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.Agents searched the area, with help from a helicopter crew, but were unable to locate the four people who ran from the vehicle.
