As lawmakers debate critical race theory, teachers are preparing curricula for inclusivity that they hope won't be impacted by anti-CRT legislation.

As conversations surrounding critical race theory continue across Ohio and in the state legislature, educators have been searching for ways to prepare curriculum to fall within the parameters ofOhio Wesleyan University education professor Sarah Kaka is one of them.

One lesson in the book about race and gender inequality examines the film “Hidden Figures,” which is about the three Black women mathematicians — Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan — major figures during NASA’s space race in the 1960s. “I really like to debrief the characters with them ,” George said. “I think one of the strongest things in social education is the power of personal narrative.”

Last summer, discussions about critical race theory, or CRT, started to spread at Greater Columbus schools and school boards and in the state legislature.
