In 'El Tercer País,' author Michael S. Malone explores the connections between these two neighboring cities that share economic, cultural, and family ties.

The relationship and challenges ahead for the binational region were discussed during the official launch of the book “El Tercer País: San Diego & Tijuana, Two Countries, Two Cities, One Community,” in an event this week that drew together cross-border leaders, scholars and journalists.

“The perception of Tijuana is so wrong. Even in San Diego, but especially in the rest of the United States,” he said in an interview. “We’re still living in the late 1940’s, with all the myths and legends from the dark days, and when you tell people Tijuana is actually bigger now than San Diego, they don’t believe that.
