Attorney General Pam Bondi begins her tenure with a focus on combating 'weaponized justice,' reinstating federal executions, and dismantling cartels.
Attorney General Pam Bondi will make a series of significant directives on her first day leading the Justice Department . These directives include combating the weaponization of the legal system, requiring prosecutors to seek the death penalty when appropriate, and collaborating with the Department of Homeland Security to completely eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations . Bondi was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday night and sworn in on Wednesday.
Fox News Digital exclusively obtained memos outlining Bondi’s first-day directives, which will set the foundation for the Justice Department under her leadership. One directive focuses on 'zealous advocacy,' stating that DOJ attorneys have a responsibility to aggressively enforce criminal laws passed by Congress and vigorously defend presidential policies and actions against legal challenges. The memo emphasizes that attorneys' discretion does not extend to substituting their personal political views for those prevailing in the election. It further warns that attorneys refusing to faithfully carry out their role, such as declining to advance good-faith arguments or refusing to sign briefs, will face disciplinary action and potential termination.Bondi plans to establish the 'Weaponization Working Group' to investigate instances of 'politicized justice' within law enforcement agencies over the past four years. Initial reviews will target prosecutions against former President Trump led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The working group will also scrutinize potential prosecutorial abuse related to January 6, 2021, the FBI's targeting of Catholic Americans, the Justice Department's targeting of parents at school board meetings, and abuses of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.Additionally, Bondi will end the moratorium on federal executions and order federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty when appropriate, particularly in violent drug trafficking cases. She also plans to review instances where the previous administration opted not to seek the death penalty and rescind any DOJ policies that deviate from President Trump's death penalty executive order. This marks a significant shift from the Biden administration's approach to capital punishment. Finally, Bondi directs the Justice Department to partner with the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies to 'completely eliminate' cartel and transnational criminal organization threats. This will involve re-evaluating charging priorities to focus on dismantling cartels' operational capacity rather than solely targeting low-level offenders. The Justice Department is expected to temporarily suspend bureaucratic approvals and reviews to prioritize swift prosecutions and captures of those accused of capital crimes, terrorism, or aiding cartel operations
