President-elect Trump's attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, stated she would advise him on potential pardons for January 6th rioters on a case-by-case basis. Bondi's confirmation hearing sparked debate about Trump's stance on pardons and the Justice Department's role.
President-elect Donald Trump 's nominee for attorney general , Pam Bondi, stated that she would advise the president on potential pardons for individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol riot if confirmed. During her confirmation hearings on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Bondi was questioned by Democratic Senator Dick Durbin regarding her stance on pardoning those convicted for their role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Bondi responded to the Senate Judiciary Committee's ranking member that while the pardoning power ultimately rests with the president, she would 'look at each case and advise on a case-by-case basis' if consulted by Trump on these matters.Trump's stance on pardoning his supporters who stormed the Capitol four years ago has been ambiguous since his election victory. The president-elect previously indicated that he would pardon these individuals on his first day in office. When pressed by Durbin about the convictions of those who violently assaulted Capitol police, Bondi assured the Illinois Democrat, 'Let me be very clear in speaking to you, I condemn any violence on a law enforcement officer in this country.' Over 600 defendants have been charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding police officers during the riot. The language employed by Bondi and the incoming administration, using the phrase 'case-by-case,' has generated frustration among some in the MAGA base. They argue that this messaging is a veiled attempt by Trump to pardon some supporters but not others. Some of Trump's congressional allies, such as GOP Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Andy Biggs, have urged the president-elect to issue blanket pardons for those involved in the Capitol storming. This move was reportedly considered by Trump but ultimately not pursued. Bondi was selected by Trump to lead the Justice Department after his initial pick, controversial former Representative Matt Gaetz, faced an insufficient number of votes for confirmation. Gaetz, who withdrew his nomination in late November, had been among the most vocal proponents of January 6th pardons in Washington.Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is reportedly deliberating preemptive pardons for political adversaries of Trump, including members of the January 6th committee, in his final week in office. Democratic Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson has stated that he would accept a pardon from the White House.
