A judge denied bond Tuesday for the former Okaloosa County deputy charged with manslaughter in the killing of Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson in May.
Monday afternoon at the Okaloosa County Jail. His next court date is set for Thursday at 12:30 p.m. for apre-trial detention hearing."We've had this hanging over us since May," he said. "We believe he's no flight risk. He's gonna show up Thursday -- he's gonna show up anytime. He need not to spend time in the jail the next few days -- especially when they indicated, because of special concerns, they might move him over to Escambia County.
The State Attorney's Office announced Friday that Duran was charged withmanslaughter with a firearm following the conclusion of the its investigation.If convicted as charged, Duran faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison. The fatal shooting of Fortson, 23, took place on May 3 at his apartment on Racetrack Road in Fort Walton Beach.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office fired Duran in late May after its internal affairs investigation determined his use of deadly force "was not objectively reasonable and therefore violated agency policy."
