While it may have been over the top, a colleague’s recent branding of the Wallabies as wimps was probably on brand with the overconfidence South African rugby fans are currently feeling ahead of the Springboks’ first Rugby Championship clash against the Australians in two years.
The Aussies haven’t exactly helped dispel the notion that their new sponsorship by Cadbury is apt because they’re soft in the middle, what with their comprehensive whitewash by New Zealand in the recently concluded Bledisloe Cup, a trans-Tasman series in which they lost 33-25, 57-22 and 38-21. Said five reasons are the number of wins the Boks have had in Australia since they were readmitted to international rugby in 1992, which is not much better than the four they have in New Zealand.So the Springboks don’t just turn up in Australia and win, regardless of what shape the hosts look to be in. There are other reasons the Boks should not necessarily expect to add to their last win in Australia, which happened as long ago as 2013 in Brisbane.
That said, when you consider how much they have achieved since their last visit to Australia – where they lost the 2018 test in Brisbane, in which hooker Bongi Mbonambi was substituted after controversially “emptying his tank” by the 35th minute – is not exactly a run-of-the-mill Bok team.
