The Bank of Japan's Research and Statistics Department released the following four measures of underlying inflation in line with the monthly release of the official CPI for Japan: the diffusion index of increasing/decreasing items, the trimmed mean, the mode, and the weighted median. According to the BOJ's measures, the trimmed mean reading for core inflation arrived at 2.3% in February from 2.6% in January and was substantially lower than the peak of 3.4% in September last year.
The BoJ has directly intervened in currency markets sometimes, generally to lower the value of the Yen, although it refrains from doing it often due to political concerns of its main trading partners. The current BoJ ultra-loose monetary policy, based on massive stimulus to the economy, has caused the Yen to depreciate against its main currency peers.
