GEORGE TOWN: Police busted a bogus 'bomoh' scam syndicate that preyed on senior citizens with the arrest of five foreign nationals at KL International Airport (KLIA) on Thursday (April 27).

Penang deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Fisol Salleh said the suspects, four women and a man, aged 40 to 50, were arrested while trying to escape to China. "We also seized nine mobile phones, five bags, various types of jewellery, 11 watches of various brands, and a total of 94,300 yuan," he told a press conference at state police headquarters Tuesday .

DCP Fisol said the syndicate, believed to have been active since January, duped their victims into buying medicine and paying for prayers in return for curing their illnesses. He said the syndicate's modus operandi was to go to public markets early in the morning and approach women over the age of 60."The members of the syndicate also gave their phone numbers to the victims to offer follow-up treatment.The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
