Boeing Co. plans to lay off 10% of its workforce — or about 17,000 people — and is cutting production in response to the crisis facing the planemaker amid a month-old strike. The reductions will include executives, managers and employees, new CEO Kelly Ortberg said Friday afternoon in a memo to employees. Boeing ended 2023 with 171,000 employees, including about 3,000 in San Antonio . “Our business is in a difficult position, and it is hard to overstate the challenges we face together,” he wrote.

Boeing already has initiated a range of cost-cutting plans as it grapples with dwindling cash reserves and low output. The company has put some workers on furlough, frozen hiring and cut back on corporate travel.
