Footage from body-worn cameras reveals the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of Leonardo Diaz by Torrance police officers. The video shows Diaz walking towards officers while holding a screwdriver, which officers initially mistook for a knife. Prior to the encounter, Diaz appeared to be bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The incident began when Diaz called 911 reporting a man with a gun.

Leonardo Diaz tragically lost his life following a confrontation with four police officers in Torrance last month. Footage from body-worn camera s, released on Wednesday, January 15th, revealed the chilling details of the incident. The video shows Diaz walking towards officers while holding what they initially perceived as a knife, but was later identified as a screwdriver. Prior to the encounter, Diaz appeared to be bleeding from self-inflicted wounds.

The incident began when Diaz called 911 around 4:40 p.m. on December 2nd, reporting a man with a gun in the 2900 block of Oregon Court. When the dispatcher inquired about the suspect's location, Diaz claimed to be the one with the gun. The call abruptly ended before the dispatcher could delve further into the situation. Officers responded to the area and, using technology, tracked Diaz down to his vehicle, a green Dodge Charger parked on Oregon Court.Body-worn camera footage captured the interaction between officers and Diaz. They repeatedly instructed him to roll down his windows, open his door completely, and display his hands. At one point, Diaz appeared to partially open his door and glance back at the officers before pulling it shut again. Officers believed Diaz possessed a knife and was bleeding. Although less-lethal resources were summoned to the scene, it remains unclear if any officer had access to or deployed such weaponry. Diaz exited his vehicle and continued walking towards the officers despite their commands to turn around and lie down. The situation escalated, culminating in four officers firing their lethal weapons at Diaz. As he fell to the ground, officers continued to order him to drop what they believed to be a knife. Paramedics arrived but were unable to revive Diaz, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
