As many as 90 vehicles were removed from the structure’s buckled decks.
Officials said recovery efforts were made more difficult by the possibility that ongoing work could further destabilize the structure.
A controlled demolition of the collapsed parking lot is “time consuming and tedious and needs to be done slowly,” according to officials. The garage caved at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, a few blocks from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, killing at least one person and injuring five others. In all, six nearby buildings were under evacuation orders pending inspections, according to city officials.
The mayor said the body of the man killed in the collapse was discovered by a doglike robot deployed by the Fire Department to search the ruins.
