Officials said the identity was confirmed through forensic analysis.
"Our sincere condolences are with the juvenile victim's friends and family during this very difficult time. We also want to thank all the first responders who assisted with not only the initial rescue operations, but that of the recovery efforts," police said in a statement Wednesday night. Family members said Carter was in the water with other students when the incident occurred. They added that chaperones were present and monitoring the group as they entered the ocean.
Officials noted that no lifeguards were on duty at the time, which is typical for weekday beach hours in early June. Three other students also needed help in the water and were rescued, authorities said. A Wildwood police officer was among the first to respond and assisted in bringing them to safety.
