Bochy was set to manage France before the 2020 tournament was canceled amid the pandemic.
Former Giants manager Bruce Bochy is set to manage France in the World Baseball Classic two and a half years after he initially planned to do the job.
The three-time World Series champion was in line to head up the French team at the 2020 tournament before the pandemic turned the sports world upside down and the Classic was canceled. Bochy, who was born in Bussac-Forêt, France is rejoining the French national team after stepping away in 2021 for the European Championship, citing health concerns amid the pandemic.
Now he’ll aim to help France qualify for one of four remaining spots in next spring’s tournament. Bochy’s French team will compete in a six-team qualifying tournament Sept. 16-21 in Regensburg, Germany with the top two teams earning a spot in the Classic. Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, Great Britain and South Africa are the other teams in the pool with France.
