The Bureau of Customs said Wednesday that it is currently nursing close to 30 employees who tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Assistant Commissioner Vincent Philip Maronilla disclosed that there are currently 28 active cases of the disease among Customs employees.
“Since they are all asymptomatic some opted to quarantine themselves at home. While others chose to be admitted to hospitals because although they are asymptomatic they have preexisting conditions that are considered risk factors with COVID-19,” Maronilla said. A total of 1,845 employees of the bureau had undergone testing for the disease since the agency started testing its employees in April.
“The situation in the Bureau of Customs is very alarming. Employees are anxious and feeling afraid of the increasing number of BOC employees being infected of the virus due to lack of proper action to control and minimize the spread of the virus in the workplace,” the BOCEA said in a letter sent to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on June 29.
