The Sesame Workshop confirmed McGrath's death in a statement shared with USA TODAY and on Twitter on Sunday.a beloved member of the Sesame Street family for over 50 years," the statement read. "A founding cast member, Bob embodied the melodies of Sesame Street like no one else, and his performances brought joy and wonder to generations of children around the world."
The Illinois-born actor was a veteran of the children's series and was one of the four non-Muppet characters when the show first premiered on Nov. 10, 1969. Sesame Workshop mourns the passing of Bob McGrath, a beloved member of the Sesame Street family for over 50 years.
