San Antonio Symphony board pulls the plug on 83-year-old orchestra in wake of season-ending strike

The Symphony Society of San Antonio announced on Thursday that it had dissolved the symphony and filed for bankruptcy.The Symphony Society of San Antonio, the nonprofit board that runs the orchestra, has initiated bankruptcy proceedings, and the orchestra is being dissolved.
The musicians were not notified of the decision before the statement was posted, said violinist Mary Ellen Goree, the chair of the musicians’ negotiating committee. She learned she was out of a job because she received the announcement that went to donors and ticketbuyers in her email. The musicians had been renegotiating the contract for the 2021-22 season with the board. They unanimously rejected a proposal that would have reduced pay and eliminated 30 full-time positions.
